About Woodburn:

Woodburn is a city located in Marion County, Oregon. Lewis McArthur records a verbal tradition told to him by Charles E. Nebergall that Woodburn was named in the 1880s, after the railroad line had been laid thourgh the area, for a slash burn that got out of control and burned down a nearby woodlot. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,100.

Woodburn is located at 45°8'50" North, 122°51'30" West (45.147258, -122.858436).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.5 km2 (5.2 mi2). 13.5 km2 (5.2 mi2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Woodburn Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 20,100 people, 6,274 households, and 4,492 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,492.4/km2 (3,865.8/mi2). There are 6,824 housing units at an average density of 506.7/km2 (1,312.5/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 58.12% White, 0.45% African American, 1.17% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 35.66% from other races, and 4.00% from two or more races. 50.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Woodburn is also home for a sizeable community of Russian Orthodox Old Believers, who form between a quarter and a third of the population.

There are 6,274 households out of which 34.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.11 and the average family size is 3.63.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 11.8% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 14.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 107.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,722, and the median income for a family is $36,730. Males have a median income of $21,702 versus $22,606 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,954. 17.3% of the population and 11.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Woodburn History:

Woodburn was founded by Jesse H. Settlemier. There is a museum called the Settlemier house located on Settlemier Avenue, both of which were named after him.
